Best Angular Select and Autocomplete Components in 2026: 10 Libraries Compared
Short answer. Choose ng-select if you want a dedicated free select: search, tags, server-side search, load on scroll, virtualization and groups in one MIT package. Choose NG-ZORRO if you want the same breadth inside a full component suite, also free. Choose Angular Material if your app uses Material, knowing that filtering the autocomplete list is code you write. Choose PrimeNG if you want the most options in one component and accept the PrimeUI License. Choose CoreUI Autocomplete (PRO) if your app runs on CoreUI or Bootstrap and you want match highlighting, inline hints and a value that submits with a plain HTML form.
How we compared
We compared 10 Angular select and autocomplete libraries in October 2026 using each vendor’s documentation, API reference, published package code and npm release (versions are in the table). ng-bootstrap and ngx-bootstrap have no Select component, so we rated their Typeahead, the closest equivalent. A ❌ means the vendor documents the gap or we confirmed it in a demo. When the documentation is silent we write — (no data), which is not a claim that the feature is missing. CoreUI publishes this page; CoreUI’s own ❌ entries come from its API reference and package code.

The libraries, one by one
ng-select
ng-select 24.2.1 (MIT) is the dedicated select most Angular teams know. Search is on by default with a custom searchFn, [addTag] creates options (also on the server), [typeahead] with [loading] handles server-side search, (scrollToEnd) loads more, and [virtualScroll] renders only about 30 options in the DOM. Groups, option and label templates, a clear button and a “not found” template are built in. Highlighting comes from the separate @ng-select/ng-option-highlight package.
Choose it if you want one free package that covers almost every select scenario.
NG-ZORRO Select and AutoComplete
NG-ZORRO 22.1.2 (MIT) has nz-select with search, nzServerSearch with a loading state, (nzScrollToBottom) for loading on scroll and built-in virtual scrolling (the docs demo uses 10,000 options). nzCustomTemplate renders the selected value, nzAllowClear and nzNotFoundContent are props, and nz-autocomplete accepts free text. Creating options works in nzMode="tags", which is a multiple mode.
Choose it if you want a free, complete select inside a full component suite.
Angular Material Select and Autocomplete
Angular Material 22.2.4 (MIT) splits the job: mat-select for choosing from a list and MatAutocomplete for typing. The docs say plainly that “if we want our options to filter when we type, we need to add a custom filter”, so matching logic is yours. You get option groups, mat-select-trigger for the selected value, autoActiveFirstOption, a panel in the CDK overlay and a native <select matNativeControl> variant that submits with a form.
Choose it if you build on Material and are comfortable writing the filtering code.
PrimeNG Select and AutoComplete
PrimeNG Select 22.1.4 has the longest option list here: filter match modes, editable for free text, virtual scrolling (the docs example has 10,000 options) with lazy loading, groups, item and selected-item templates, showClear, empty messages, appendTo and a name prop. AutoComplete adds completeMethod with a loading state. Highlighting the matched text needs your own item template.
Choose it if you want the most built in and you qualify for, or pay for, the PrimeUI License.
Kendo UI DropDownList, ComboBox and AutoComplete
Kendo UI Dropdowns 25.3.0 split into DropDownList, ComboBox and AutoComplete. Filtering supports startsWith or contains, suggest completes text inline, ComboBox allowCustom accepts free text, virtual settings virtualize long lists, and groups get sticky headers. Adding new items is a documented recipe with a no-data template. All Kendo UI for Angular components require a paid license.
Choose it if you already license Kendo UI.
Taiga UI Select and ComboBox
Taiga UI 5.30.0 (Apache-2.0) offers Select, a ComboBox with tuiFilterByInput and custom matchers, non-strict mode for free text, server-side filtering with a loader, groups, item and value templates and a native picker variant. Virtual scrolling is an example you assemble with Angular CDK, and highlighting uses the tuiHighlight directive in your own option template.
Choose it if you use Taiga UI elsewhere in your app.
Spartan/ng Select, Combobox and Autocomplete
Spartan/ng (brain 1.8.3, MIT) ships Select, Combobox and Autocomplete with contains, startsWith and endsWith filters, autoHighlight, free-form text, async search examples with loading states, groups, value templates, a clear button and a Native Select. Styled code is copied into your project.
Choose it if your app follows the shadcn model with Tailwind.
ng-bootstrap and ngx-bootstrap Typeahead
Neither Bootstrap library has a Select component. ng-bootstrap Typeahead 21.0.0 takes an RxJS operator, so search, debounce and server calls are your code; it highlights matches with ngb-highlight and completes text inline with showHint. ngx-bootstrap Typeahead 22.0.0 accepts an array or Observable, adds typeaheadGroupField groups and a loading output. Both are MIT and render the list in body on request.
Choose it if you need a light autocomplete in a Bootstrap app and do not need a dropdown select.
CoreUI Autocomplete and Select
Our own entry. CoreUI Autocomplete (@coreui/angular-pro 5.7.39) is a CoreUI PRO component: $127 per developer, perpetual, 12 months of updates, renewal at the same price. The free cSelect (MIT) styles the native <select>. NG-ZORRO and ng-select give you virtualization and server search for free, so here is what PRO adds: highlightOptionsOnSearch, showHints ghost text accepted with Tab, free text by default, external search with debounce and a loading state, virtualScroller (5.7.32+), groups, option templates, a cleaner, a no-results template, validation states, and a native input whose value submits with a plain form.
Where CoreUI loses: no load-on-scroll event, no template for the selected value, and the list is not rendered in a portal, so a parent with overflow: hidden can clip it. A single select with created options is not documented.
Choose it if your app is built on CoreUI or Bootstrap and you want a styled autocomplete that matches your forms. Team prices are on the pricing page.

- ng-select 24 renders its panel in the CDK overlay.
- Spartan/ng reached 1.0 on June 24, 2026 and released 1.8.3 on October 27.
FAQ
What is the best free Angular select component?
ng-select: search, tags, server-side search, load on scroll, virtualization and groups are all in one MIT package. NG-ZORRO is the free alternative if you want a full component suite.
Which Angular selects support virtual scrolling?
ng-select ([virtualScroll]), NG-ZORRO (built in), PrimeNG (virtualScroll), Kendo UI (virtual) and CoreUI Autocomplete (virtualScroller). Taiga UI shows it as an example built with Angular CDK.
Which Angular autocomplete highlights the matching text?
ng-bootstrap and ngx-bootstrap Typeahead highlight matches by default, and CoreUI Autocomplete has highlightOptionsOnSearch. ng-select needs the separate ng-option-highlight package, and Taiga UI the tuiHighlight directive in your template.
Does Angular Material autocomplete filter options automatically?
No. The Angular Material docs state that you need to add a custom filter for options to filter as you type.
Which Angular select works with a plain HTML form?
PrimeNG Select has a name prop, Angular Material’s native select variant submits normally, and CoreUI Autocomplete is a directive on a native input. ng-select and NG-ZORRO pass values through Angular forms.
