Best JavaScript Table Libraries (2026): 5 Data Tables Compared
The best JavaScript table library depends on how much you want built in and what your budget is. DataTables 3 is the strongest free default: since version 3 it no longer needs jQuery, and its MIT core plus free extensions cover multi-column sorting, column filters, server-side processing, row selection, pinned columns, virtual scrolling, export and an official Bootstrap 5 integration; only editing is paid. Tabulator packs the most into one free MIT package, including tree rows, inline editing with undo, resizable columns and XLSX and PDF export. Grid.js is fine for small, simple tables, but it has not released since March 2024. simple-datatables is a light option with editing and export, under LGPL-3.0 rather than MIT. CoreUI Data Grid is a commercial grid with virtualization, column filters with operators, editing and Excel export built in, sold as a separate product.
One thing to know first: CoreUI for Bootstrap, free or PRO, does not include a data table component. It has CSS table styles, and the Smart Table component exists only for React, Vue and Angular. For JavaScript and Bootstrap projects our answer is CoreUI Data Grid, a separate product, and DataTables 3 is a strong free alternative.
How we compared
We reviewed five JavaScript table libraries in October 2026 against a 24-feature data table checklist, using the current npm release of each: datatables.net 3.1.4 with its MIT extensions (Editor 3.1.1 for the paid part), tabulator-tables 6.7.1, gridjs 6.2.0, simple-datatables 10.3.0 and @coreui/data-grid 0.4.0. Bootstrap 5.3.8 tables are covered below the table, since they are styles only.
Each cell comes from the vendor’s documentation, its published source code, or a test in a public demo or a sandbox with 5,000 rows. We only mark a feature as missing (❌) when the vendor says so in its own docs or roadmap, or when we reproduced the gap in a working test. When the docs are silent we show — (no data), which is not a claim that the feature is absent. CoreUI publishes this page; its row follows the same rules, and its ❌ entries come from our own docs and roadmap.
The comparison at a glance

What Bootstrap gives you
Bootstrap 5.3 describes its tables as “opt-in styling of tables (given their prevalent use in JavaScript plugins)”. It styles a plain <table>: striped and hover rows, borders, compact sizing, color variants and .table-responsive wrappers that scroll horizontally on small screens. Bootstrap’s JavaScript plugins (alert, button, carousel, collapse, dropdown, modal, offcanvas, popover, scrollspy, tab, toast and tooltip) do not include table behavior, so sorting, searching, paging and selection come from a library. CoreUI for Bootstrap adds the same kind of CSS table styles.
The libraries, one by one
DataTables 3
DataTables is the long-standing leader for plain JavaScript and Bootstrap tables, and version 3.0 (July 24, 2026) removed the jQuery requirement: “It has no dependencies (no jQuery requirement any more)”. Many older tutorials still assume jQuery. The MIT core sorts by several columns with Shift-click, searches globally, paginates with a page length menu and switches to server-side processing with serverSide: true. Free MIT extensions add per-column filters with type-aware operators (ColumnControl), row and cell selection with a select all checkbox (Select), a sticky header (FixedHeader), pinned columns (FixedColumns), virtual scrolling that kept 45 rows in the DOM for a 50,000-record demo (Scroller), responsive column hiding (Responsive) and copy, CSV, Excel, PDF and print buttons (Buttons). datatables.net-bs5 provides the official Bootstrap 5 styling.
What costs money: inline editing is the Editor, part of DataTables Plus with CardView, SearchPanes and StateRestore, from $219 for one developer with 12 months of updates and $88 per year after that (vendor pricing, October 28, 2026). Column resizing is listed in the 3.0 announcement as a future plan, not a shipped feature. Row details need a few lines of your own code around row().child().
Choose it if you want the widest free feature set with an official Bootstrap 5 look.
Tabulator
Tabulator 6.7.1 (MIT, October 22, 2026) is the most complete free package in one download. It sorts by multiple columns with Ctrl or Shift, adds filters in column headers, paginates locally or remotely with a page size selector, selects rows with a select all checkbox, nests rows as a tree with dataTree, freezes columns and rows, resizes columns and rows, toggles columns, collapses columns on narrow screens, and renders through a virtual DOM by default (20 row elements for 1,000 rows in the demo). Cell editors include input, number, list and date with validation and undo and redo history, and downloads cover CSV, JSON, XLSX, PDF and HTML. A Bootstrap 5 theme file ships in the package. There is no built-in global search box; you wire one to setFilter.
Choose it if you need tree data, editing or export for free and you are fine with a large API.
Grid.js
Grid.js 6.2.0 (MIT, built on Preact) is a light table for straightforward cases: sorting with Shift-click for multiple columns, a custom compare, a search box with optional server-side search, pagination, a server data source with a loading bar, a fixed header and resizable columns. A row selection plugin adds checkboxes, without a select all checkbox in our test. In a sandbox with 5,000 rows and no pagination, all 5,000 rows were in the DOM. The only bundled theme is its own “mermaid” style. The last release is 6.2.0 from March 3, 2024.
Choose it if you need a small, simple sortable and searchable table and a library without recent releases is acceptable.
simple-datatables
simple-datatables 10.3.0 (July 30, 2026) is the actively released successor of vanilla-datatables. It includes a search box with a custom searchMethod, paging with a per-page select, column hiding, a sticky header with scrollY, cell rendering, an editable mode (makeEditable) with a context menu, and export to CSV, JSON, TXT and SQL. Column filters are an API (multiSearch) you connect to your own inputs, server data means fetching and swapping rows yourself, and selection is a pattern from the demos rather than a feature. With 5,000 rows, all 5,000 were in the DOM. Note the license: LGPL-3.0, not MIT, which some legal reviews flag.
Choose it if you want a small table with editing and export and LGPL-3.0 is acceptable.
CoreUI Data Grid
Our own entry. CoreUI Data Grid (@coreui/data-grid 0.4.0, October 22, 2026) is a separate product from CoreUI for Bootstrap: $217, one license covering JavaScript, React, Vue and Angular, and not included in the CoreUI PRO plan for Bootstrap. It is version 0.4.0, before 1.0, so expect the API to keep growing.
Built in: multi-column sorting, column filter dialogs with type operators and value sets, a global filter, custom filter functions, pagination with page size options, a dataProvider that sends sorting, filtering and paging to your backend, a loading overlay, checkbox selection with “select all rows”, columns pinned to either side, column sizing and visibility, row virtualization switched on by default (23 rows in the DOM for 100,001 rows in the demo), inline editing with text, number and select editors, validation and undo and redo, and export to CSV and XLSX plus print. Its stylesheet picks up CoreUI for Bootstrap 5 styles when they are on the page.
Where it loses: there are no row details and no tree data (both on the public roadmap as planned), no single-row selection mode and no card layout for phones. DataTables covers most of what the Data Grid does for free, and Tabulator adds tree rows and editing at no cost.
Choose it if you want virtualization, column filters with operators, editing and Excel export in one supported package, or you need the same grid across JavaScript, React, Vue and Angular. Prices are on the pricing page.
Maintenance and licensing in 2026
DataTables (October 2026), Tabulator (October 2026), simple-datatables (July 2026) and CoreUI Data Grid (October 2026) are actively released. Grid.js has not released since March 2024. On licensing, DataTables, Tabulator and Grid.js are MIT, simple-datatables is LGPL-3.0, DataTables Editor and the rest of DataTables Plus are commercial with a license key, and CoreUI Data Grid is commercial.
FAQ
What is the best free JavaScript data table library?
DataTables 3 for most projects: MIT core, no jQuery since version 3, official Bootstrap 5 styling and free extensions for column filters, selection, pinned columns, virtual scrolling and export. Choose Tabulator instead if you need tree rows or inline editing for free.
Does DataTables still require jQuery?
No. DataTables 3.0, released July 24, 2026, has no dependencies. Versions 1.x and 2.x required jQuery, which is why many older guides still load it. A jQuery integration remains optional.
Does CoreUI for Bootstrap have a data table?
No. CoreUI for Bootstrap, free and PRO, ships CSS table styles only; Smart Table exists for React, Vue and Angular. For JavaScript projects we offer CoreUI Data Grid as a separate product at $217, or you can use DataTables or Tabulator with CoreUI’s styles.
Which JavaScript table libraries can export to Excel?
DataTables (Buttons extension, MIT, with JSZip), Tabulator (XLSX through SheetJS) and CoreUI Data Grid (XLSX). simple-datatables exports CSV, JSON, TXT and SQL.
Which tables handle 100,000 rows in the browser?
Libraries with row virtualization: DataTables with Scroller, Tabulator (virtual DOM by default) and CoreUI Data Grid (on by default). In our 5,000-row sandbox, Grid.js and simple-datatables rendered every row, so use paging or server-side mode with them.
